A social media report nobody dreads

Measurement and running 8 min read

A short printed report on a meeting table with a simple chart facing the reader
They read the first page. Write that one.

Agency reports are often forty slides, which is a way of demonstrating effort rather than results. Clients read the first page and the last, and they are right to.

Write the page they read.

The one page#

  1. The six numbers, this month and last, with the direction.
  2. One paragraph: what changed and why we think so.
  3. What we published, briefly — the work is part of the report.
  4. What we recommend doing next month, with a reason.
  5. One thing we tried that did not work, and what we learned.

Say what you do not know#

Attribution on social is imperfect and everyone in the room knows it. A report that claims precision it cannot have damages trust more than an honest range. "Between twelve and twenty enquiries can be traced to social this month; here is why the range exists" reads as competence.

Include the failed experiment every month. Reports that only contain successes stop being believed, and the failures are where the learning is.

What clients actually want to know#

A social media report nobody dreads — What clients actually want to know
They askThey mean
How many followers did we gain?Is this working?
Why was this month lower?Should I be worried?
What are we doing next month? Is there a plan or are we improvising?
Can we do more? What would more money buy?

Same format, every month#

A report whose shape changes each month cannot be compared, which is the entire purpose of reporting. Fix the format, fix the numbers, and let the interpretation be the part that varies. After six months the trend becomes the most valuable thing you produce.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a monthly report be?

One page. Attach detail for anyone who wants it, but the page has to stand alone.

Should we report follower growth?

Report it if the client expects it, below the numbers that matter, and explain why it is the weakest signal.

What if the month was bad?

Say so plainly, explain what you think caused it, and state what changes. Hidden bad months become lost accounts.

Written by practitioners

Every guide is written by people who manage brand accounts week to week, not spun from other sites.

Reviewed on a schedule

Platforms change constantly. Each guide carries the date of its last review, and we publish the date even when nothing changed.

No paid placements

No scheduling tool, agency or platform partner can buy a mention, a ranking or a link here.

Twelve languages

Every guide is translated, not machine-popped — each language has its own URL and its own review date.

Limits named

We say plainly what posting more will not fix, and when the answer is fewer channels rather than more.
